Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Friday, faulted the removal of history as a subject from secondary and primary school curriculum by the Federal Government.
Speaking in Makurdi at the 'Media Week and Communications Day 2021' organized by the Directorate of Social Communications, Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, the governor said Benue State will legislate a solution for the teaching of History even if it’s for internal consumption of knowledge about how the people of Benue came to occupy what is today called Benue.
The governor said: “Removing history from our curriculum is an evil agenda to prevent the young generation from knowing their past. So, in our schools here even if we do it and it is not accepted for examinations to be conducted at the level of SSCE, let’s do Mock Exams, this will be within us. Because we must know our history, we must know how we came here.
“Even if Nigeria won’t restore the study of history to the school curriculum, we in Benue will initiate a legislation to make history a compulsory subject in schools in the state.
“Our children need to know how their forefathers lived on this land hundreds of years ago. Our children need to know what took place at Ushongo Hills in 1804 and why this land and our people were not conquered till this day.”
